Summary: Throughout the book, When Daddy Prays, the young little boy gets to see how his father talks to God every day in prayer. The poetry is whimsical and the imagery is exquisite. "When daddy prays, his muscled shoulders shake. His lips become all trembly. Because I hear tears in his voice when daddy prays" (Grimes 4). This is an example of how impactful and descriptive each line of the poems are written. Every time you turn the page, a new day begins and a different scenario is taking place. The poems convey the peace that the boys' daddy has after praying to his Lord, Jesus. These poems from an African American child's perspective brings to light the Christ-like relationship between a father and son.
